Which credential unlocks the most doors?

Get APTS now; treat AIIC as the multi-year north star. APTS is free, fast, and gives instant Arabic-market credibility + directory visibility. AIIC unlocks the very top — premium conference/RSI work, KUDO Pro, Interprefy, institutional clients — but needs 150 logged conference days and three senior sponsors. Complementary, not either/or.

Recommended sequence

1
Now · 0–3 months

Apply for APTS certification

Free, fast, immediately useful. Add it to ProZ, Upwork and LinkedIn and link the APTS profile — the best credibility win for the effort.

2
Ongoing · from day one

Log every interpreting day

Record each job: date, client/event, language pair, mode, hours. AIIC needs 150 documented days — you can only claim what you've logged.

3
Parallel · 0–12 months

Get KUDO Certified & onto Interprefy

Their own certifications are attainable now and generate exactly the conference days AIIC later counts — while paying you.

4
Medium term · 12–36 months

Cultivate 3 AIIC sponsors, then apply

Network with AIIC members via KUDO/Interprefy work and regional events. With 150 days + sponsors, apply in a May 31 / Nov 30 window.

Bridge credentials worth considering

  • CIOL / ITI (UK) or ATA (US) Arabic↔English certification — more attainable than AIIC, respected for translation & agency vetting.
  • Gulf legal/sworn translator accreditation (e.g. UAE Ministry of Justice) — opens higher-margin certified/legal work where his Arabic↔English is strongest.
